Jaguar Men’s Basketball Loses Final Regular Season Game

Jaguar men’s basketball lost for the first time in five games, at the Cajundome to Louisiana. The final score 74-64 in the final game of the regular season. Louisiana was a much more physical team. The Cajuns disrupted the flow of the Jags offense.

The first half was pretty much back and forth. Neither team would get out to a lead larger than 3 points, and the Jaguars would squeeze out a one point advantage at halftime.

The second half started off much of the same way, that the first half did. Louisiana would grab a four point lead of 49-45 at the 11:30 mark of the 2nd half. Slowly increasing their lead to 12 on numerous occasions. The final time was at the 4:18 mark of the second half. The Jaguars could only get the lead down to 6 points with 1:16 left in the game. The Cajuns would get the lead back up to 10 to end the game.

The Jaguars were led by…

Isaiah Moore- 22 points and one rebound.

Owen White- 15 points and 3 rebounds

Kevin Samuel- 9 points and 4 rebounds

The Jaguars record falls to 16-15 overall and 9-9 in the Sun Belt. The Jags were able to get up to the 8th seed and a first round bye, thanks to the previous 5 game winning streak. They will now face the 9th seed App State, in the second round on Thursday March 2nd at 11:30. The tournament is very winnable for South Alabama, The Jaguars beat App State 74-57 on February 11th. The winner of this game would await a rested number 1 seed Southern Miss. South Alabama is 1-1 this season vs USM losing by 4 points on the road 76-72, and winning at home versus the Golden Eagles by 31 points 85-54.

Jaguar Women’s Basketball Wins On Senior Night.

Jaguar Women’s Basketball wins a hard fought battle with their rival Troy. The Jags were down one, the score 59-58 with 3 seconds left. Troy and the Jaguars would both take timeouts. South Alabama would have the ball as play resumed. Freshman sensation Kelsey Thompson would get the ball, and hit a jumper from outside the paint as time expired. Giving the Jags the victory as time expired over the Troy.

South Alabama get the scoring started early, on a three pointer by Casey Ferguson, ten seconds into the game. The Jags and Troy would go back and forth during the most of the first quarter. The Jaguars would eventually start to pull away at the end of quarter, going up by nine, scoring on Ferguson’s second chance jump shot in the paint with 5 seconds left. That would cap off an amazing run in the first quarter by Ferguson, scoring 14 points and 3 rebounds. The Jags led 25-16.

The momentum would be short lived as the second quarter moved along the Jaguars would become ice cold. South didn’t make their first goal until nearly halfway into the quarter. Kelsey Thompson would hit a pull up jumper at the 5:26 mark. Then, Thompson would hit a three pointer at the 4:52 mark to push the Jags lead to ten at 30-20. Unfortunately those 5 points are all the Jags would get for the entire quarter. Troy was able to trim the lead down to two, the Jaguars led 30-28 at the half.

Troy was able to outscore the Jaguars 19-14 to take a lead of 47-44 at the end of the third quarter.

The 4th quarter was more back and forth. Troy’s lead would get to seven points at 51-44, at the 8:43 mark. The Jaguars would go on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 51 apiece with 5:34 left in the game. Troy’s lead would get back up to 4 points, with 1:33 left before the Jaguars would cut the deficit to one with ten seconds left. That would lead to the exciting finish by Thompson.

The Jags were led by…

Kelsey Thompson- 22 points and 8 rebounds, recording her 13th double-figure game game this season and her 5th game with over 20 points on the season.

Casey Ferguson- 16 points and 7 rebounds. Casey had 14 of those poirter and made 4 three pointers throughout the game which were season highs.

Kiana Anderson – 6 points and 9 rebounds The 9 rebounds led the team for the 12th time this season.

With the win the Jaguars improved their record to 7-22 overall and 3-15 in the Sun Belt Conference. The win would also get the Jags out of last place in the standings, and up to the 13th seed for the Sun Belt tournament. The Jaguars will still have to win 5 straight games to move on, which, they have not been able to do all season. Anything can happen though, during tournament time.

Next up

The 13 seed Jaguars will play 12 seed Georgia State in the opening game of the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Game time 11:30 on February 28th.
South lost to Georgia State in overtime of their last matchup. The winner of this game will face Old Dominion.

Jaguar Softball Loses A Tough Game Versus Tulsa.

Jaguar softball loses a tough game versus Tulsa to open the South Alabama Invitational. The final score 4-2.

Tulsa opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning. The Golden Hurricanes would pick up 2 runs on two hits. The Jaguars would commit 2 errors in the inning as well. South Alabama would trail 2-0 after 1 inning.

The Jags would get the offense going in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Gabby Stagner would single to left field on the 1st pitch of the inning. Sasha Willems would single to center field. Stephanie Gonzalez flied out and Bailey Welch would line out for the first 2 outs of the inning. Marley Sims was hit by the 1-2 pitch to load the bases. Mackenzie Brasher would step to the plate. Brasher would hit the 1-1 pitch for an RBI single through the left side. Stagner would score on the play. Meredith Keel would pop out to second to end the inning. The Jaguars were on the board but trail 2-1.

In the top of the 3rd Tulsa would score another run, extending their lead 3-1 over South Alabama. The score would hold until the top of the 7th.

The Golden Hurricanes would pick up another run, and extend their lead by one more run. The Jags would now trail in the top of the 7th.

South Alabama would answer the Tulsa scoring in the bottom of the seventh. Shelby Garrett would pinch hit for Welch. Garrett would hit a single up the middle on the second pitch. Welch would return to the game to run for Garrett. Sims flied out to right field for the first out. Brasher struck out for out two. On the play Welch would advance to second on throwing error by the catcher. Then to third on a pickoff attempt that didn’t work. Keel hit and RBI single to the shortstop scoring Welch on the play. That would be as close as the Jags would get. Meredith Keel would be called for obstruction to end the game.

The Jaguars had their 5 game win streak snapped. Jenna Hardy would take the loss her record falls to 5-3. Hardy would pitch 5 innings, giving up 3 runs only 1 earned on 5 hits. Hardy would strikeout 4.

The Jaguars record falls to 6-5 overall.

On Friday, South goes into day 2 of the South Alabama Invitational playing Furman at 3pm and Mississippi State at 5:30 pm.

Jaguar Baseball Gets The Win Over Tough Nicholls State

Jaguar baseball gets the win over tough Nicholls State. Tyler Smith made a solid 2023 debut for the Jaguars. The 6-3, 210 pound freshmen went 2 1/3 innings and gave up 1 run (a solo home run) on 2 hits and 4 strikeouts.

South Alabama would come to the plate down 1-0, after Nicholls picked up a run in the top half of the first via the home run.

Erick Orbeta would lead off the bottom of the 1st reaching base on an error by the 2nd baseman. Mitchell Heer would line out to left on the first pitch, for the first out. Will Turner would step to the plate and deliver an RBI double to left center.Orbeta would score on the play. Cole Ketzner then lined into a double play on the 1-0 pitch, to end the inning. The game was tied 1-1.

The game would remain tied until the top of the 5th inning. Nicholls State would pick up a run and take a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the inning the Jag bats would strike back. Joseph Sullivan would single on the 3-2 pitch back up the middle. After a pitching change by Nicholls State, the Jaguars Colson Lawrence would strike out for the first out of the inning. Sullivan would advance to second on a wild pitch. JG Bell would then come to the plate with 1 out and one on base. Bell would hit the 1st pitch for a 2 RBI home run to left field. Orbeta and Heer would both groundout to end the inning. South Alabama leads 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth the Jags would continue to keep the offense going. Will Turner would walk to lead off the inning, then steal second. Cole Ketzner would strikeout on 3 straight pitches for the 1st out. Austin Thrasher would pinch hit for Robbie Petracci. Thrasher was then hit by the 1-0 pitch. Tyler Borges would come to the state. Will Turner would steal third. Borges would reach on a fielder’s choice picking up the RBI when Turner scored. After another Nicholls pitching change, Sullivan would walk, to bring up Lawerence with one on and two outs. Coleson would hit an RBI single to left and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Borges scored on the play. JG Bell would pop out to first base for the 3rd out. Jags led 5-2.

Nicholls St would scratch and claw their way back into the game. Scoring 2 runs in the top of the eighth. That is as close as they would get, however. The Jags would close the door in the top of the ninth. Colson Lawrence who was the starting Jaguar right fielder would pitch the final inning, and pick up the save. The final score 5-4.

Zach Willingham picked up the win improving to 2-0 on the year. Logan Wash threw 1 pitch to one batter, hitting him.

The Jaguars would win their 3rd straight game and are 4-1 overall.

Next up Winless Nebraska comes to Stanky Field for three games starting Friday night.

South Alabama Softball Shuts Out McNeese

South Alabama softball shuts out McNeese pounding out 11 hits and shutout the Cowgirls 3-0 in an afternoon tilt in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The Jaguars would open up the scoring in the top of the first inning. Mackenzie Brasher struck out swinging for out one. Meredith Keel would come up next and walk on 5 pitches. Odalys Cordova would hit the first pitch of the at bat to the pitcher who threw to second getting Keel out and Cordova would beat out the return throw to first. With 2 outs Victoria Ortiz would hit the 1-1 pitch for RBI double to left center, scoring Cordova.from first. Gabby Stagner would then come to the plate. Stagner hit the 1-0 pitch for a RBI double to left center. scoring Ortiz. The Jaguars were up 2-0. With one on and two out, Sasha Willem would come to the plate. Willem would hit the 0-1 pitch to left field for an RBI single, scoring Stagner on the play.

South Alabama would go up 3-0. Emma Kropp would fly out to right field on an 0-2 pitch to end the inning.

South Alabama would have the Sun Belt Conference Player Of The Week, Olivia Lackie on the mound. Lackie would pitch a 7 inning complete game shutout, giving up no runs on 5 hits. Olivia would strike out 5 on 103 pitches, improving her record to 1-2 on season.

The Jaguars would pound out 11 hits in the game, against 3 McNeese pitchers. Ashley Vallejo would pick up the loss for the Cowgirls. Vallejo’s record would drop to 1-3 on the season.

Next Up

The Jaguars make the quick turnaround, hosting the South Alabama Invitational. The Jags will play Tulsa on Thursday evening at 5 pm. The invitational will go all the way through Sunday.

Jaguar Baseball Wins A Close One Against UAB

Jaguar baseball wins a close game versus UAB, to wrap up play at The Jaguar Classic. South Alabama is the host team for the yearly opening home weekend set of games, held in Mobile Alabama. The Jags went 3-1 this weekend.

Friday- Jag with a comeback win 3-2 vs Northwestern State

Saturday Game One- Jags lose a pitchers duel 2-0 vs Eastern Kentucky

Saturday Game Two- Jags bounce back and win by absolutely crushing Eastern Kentucky 26-5

Sunday- Jags win a hard fought close one 7-6 vs UAB

UAB would start the scoring off early in the top of the 1st inning. The Blazers would get 3 runs, off of Jaguar starter Jackson Boyd.

In the bottom of the 2nd the Jags would get on the board. Tyler Borges would come up to bat with one on and two outs. Borges would hit an RBI double to left center scoring Colson Lawerence all the way from 1st base. Jags trail 3-1 at the end of 2 innings.

In the bottom of the third, Erick Orbeta doubled on the 1-2 pitch to lead off the inning.
Orbeta would get to 3rd on a sac ground out by Austin Trasher. Will Turner would come up with one on and 1 out. Turner hit an RBI double to center field scoring Orbeta. At the end of the 3rd inning, South Alabama would trail 3-2.

In the top of the 4th UAB would pick up another run. The Blazers would extend their lead to 4-2

In the bottom of the 4th inning Borges doubled to left field. He moved to third base on the sacrifice ground out to the pitcher by JG Bell. Orbeta comes to the plate with one out and one on. Orbeta hits an RBI triple to right center scoring Borges . After a pitching change, Thrasher gets an RBI ground out to third scoring Orbeta. That would tie the game at 4-4 at the end of the 4th.

In the bottom of the 7th, with Heer sitting at third with one out. There is a pitching change for UAB. Heer scored on a wild pitch, giving the Jaguars the lead 5-4.

In the bottom of the 8th, South looks to score some insurance runs. With two outs in the inning and another UAB pitching change. The bases are loaded for the Jags with Cole Ketzner coming to bat. Ketzner hits the 1-2 pitch to left field for a 2 RBI single, scoring Heer and Will Turner on the play. The Jags would extend the lead to 7-4 heading into the top of the ninth.

In the top of the ninth UAB would get 2 runs making the score 7-6 but that’s as close as the Blazers would get. The Jags hold on to win 7-6.

South Alabama’s record improved to 3-1 and The Jaguars are on a 2 game winning streak. Danny Diaz would get the win his record improved to 1-0. Grant Wood picks up his 2nd save of the season.

Jaguar Softball Wins To Close Out The Mardi Gras Classic

Jaguar softball wins four straight to close out the Mardi Gras Classic at Jaguar Field in Mobile Alabama.

Jaguar Recap

Friday- Game one the Jags lose to Missouri State 3-1.

Friday- Game two Jags win 9-0 versus Mississippi Valley St

Saturday- Game one Jags win 10-0 vs Missouri St.

Saturday- Game two Jags win 4-1 vs Rutgers. Jenna Hardy pitched 7 innings giving up one run on five hit’s striking out six, and walking one on 105 pitches.

Sundays game was more of the same. South Alabama beats Rutgers 4-0. Olivia Lackie picks up the win and is now 3-2 on the year. Olivia pitched 4 innings of shut out ball, giving up 2 hits striking out 4 on 48 pitches. Lackie’s ERA is now down to 1.77 on the young season. Jenna Hardy came in for 3 innings of relief and also gave up no runs. Hardy gave up 3 hits striking out 2 on 54 pitches. Jenna’s ERA has dropped to 1.67.

South got the scoring started in the bottom of the second. Victoria Ortiz singled to right on the 2-2 pitch.

Gabby Stagner steps up next and hits the 1-0 pitch to center field for a 2 run home run, scoring Ortiz. The Jags would lead 2-0 after 2 innings.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning. Meredith Keel singled on a 3-2 pitch to second base. Keel would advance to second on a wild pitch. After the Odalys Cordova and Sasha Wllem were retired for two outs in the inning. Victoria Ortiz came to the plate and hit a RBI single to first base on the 0-1 pitch. Keel would advance to third on the play and Ortiz would take second on the throw. Gabby Stagner came up next and delivered a 2 RBI single to left center field scoring both Keel and Ortiz. Jags lead 4-0 at the end of the 3rd inning.

That lead would hold up for the rest of the game. Jag win 4-0 improving their record to 5-4 overall. Extending their winning streak to 4 games, and improving their home record to 4-1 on the year.

Jaguar Baseball Splits Double Header

South Alabama Jaguar baseball splits a double header versus Eastern Kentucky as part of the Jaguar Classic. In the first game the Jaguars would fall 2-0. The Jaguars had a chances in game one but couldn’t capitalize on them. Gehrig Conrad would take the loss for the Jags, giving up 1 run on three hits. Conrad pitched 5 innings walking three and striking out five.

In game two thing changed, big time. The Jags would score early and often.

In the bottom of the 2nd. Diego Altamirano would strike out for out 1. Cole Ketzner walked Colson Lawrence would single to right and Ketzner advanced to third. Tyler Borges struck out swinging for out 2. Lawrence stole 2nd. JG Bell would hit a 2 RBI single to the right side. Erick Orbeta would ground out 2 second to end the inning Jags lead 2-0.

In the bottom of the 3rd the Jags would get a run on an Altamirano hit an RBI single to center scoring Will Turner. Jags led 3-0.

In the bottom of the 4th, Orbeta would hit an RBI double to left, scoring Boges on the play. After a Will Turner walk to load the bases, Mitchell Heer was hit by the pitch and picked up the RBI scoring Orbeta. South Alabama would lead 5-0 at that point.

Eastern Kentucky would pick up a run in the inning The Jags still led 5-1

In the bottom of the fifth. Borges would reach on a throwing error, scoring Lawrence who had singled and reached second after a wild pitch. Borges would score on a wild pitch. Bell would score on another wild pitch. Altamirano hit a bases loaded RBI single to center field, scoring Thrasher and the bases would remain loaded. After an Eastern Kentucky pitching change. With one out Cole Ketzner would hit a 2 RBI double down the line scoring HEER and Turner. The Jags would break it open leading 11-1

South Alabama would keep the scoring going in the bottom of the 6th on a Will Turner 3 RBI triple scoring Thrasher Orbeta and Bell. Heer would then hit an RBI sac fly to right scoring Turner. Jags increase the lead to 15-1.

Eastern Kentucky would have a big inning in the top of the 7th the would pick up 6 runs on 4 hits. That would cut the Jaguars lead to 9 (15-6)

Then the wheels would really fall off for Eastern Kentucky in the bottom of the 7th. The Jags would get an RBI single to right from Orbeta scoring Borges. The next batter Thrasher would walk to load the bases. Turner would get an RBI single to center scoring Bell. The bases would remain loaded with nobody out. The next batter, Heer walked picking up the RBI scoring Orbeta. After an EKU pitching change, the next batter Altamirano would get the RBI bases loaded walk scoring Thrasher. Ketzner was next up with bases still loaded and nobody out. Ketzner would get an RBI single to right down the line scoring Turner from 3rd. Donaldson would pop out for out number one. Borges got a RBI bases loaded walk scoring Heer. Bell lined out to center for a RBI sac fly scoring Altamirano for out number 2. The next batter up Orbeta would get the bases again after being hit by the pitch. Thrasher would walk next on 4 straight pitches. The next batter to come up, Turner was hit by the pitch that scored Borges Turner picked up an RBI. Heer walked on 4 more pitches picking up the RBI scoring Orbeta. After another pitching change for Eastern Kentucky Altamirano wold get another bases loaded walk and RBI scoring Thrasher. Ketzner would pop out to end the inning. The Jags would pick up 11 runs on just 3 hits in the inning. They lead 26 -6.

In the top of the eighth Eastern Kentucky would go down 1-2-3. The game would end there in the bottom of the 8th.

The South Alabama Jaguars score 26 runs total of Eastern Kentucky pitching, 24 of those runs were earned runs. The Jags would earn 20 walks and 6 were batters hit by Eastern Kentucky pitchers.

Next up The Jaguars are now 2-1 on the season, and will take on UAB to close out the Jaguar Classic Sunday at 3pm

Jaguar Women’s Basketball Loses At Texas St

South Alabama women’s basketball lost at Texas St. on Saturday the final 77-57. It was the last road game of the season for the Jaguars.

South Alabama, who is stuck in last place, would get the scoring started early. The Jags would grab a quick 6-0 lead and then lead 9-2 just three minutes into the 1st quarter. The Bobcats who are in 3rd place in the Sun Belt would close the gap to two points 15-13 at the end of the quarter.

Texas St. would grab the lead at 19-17 with 6:51 left in the second quarter. Then, the Bobcats would again take the lead, this time for good 22-20 with 5:43 remaining in the second quarter. By halftime the Jags would trail by 10 the score was 35-25.

In the second half the Texas St lead would balloon to 23 points with 1:11 left in the game. The Jags would close the gap to 20 points with twenty six seconds left in the game.

The Jags were led in scoring by…

Kelsey Thompson- 23 points 1 rebound and shot 33% from behind the 3 point line.

Kiana Anderson- 8 points and 9 rebounds. In 27 minutes of playing time.

Casey Ferguson- 6 points her points came on 3’s , shooting 50% from 3 point line. (2-4)

The Jaguars as a team shot 41.7% for the game. and 36.4% behind the 3 point line. South did out rebound the Bobcats 29-28, and out scored the Bobcat’s off the bench 20-11.

Texas St. shot 51.7% overall and 47.8% from the 3 point line.

The Jaguars are currently in last place in the Sun Belt, with a 6-21 record overall and 2-14 in conference play. The still have two more chances to get out of the 14th slot before tournament play begins. The final two regular season games are at home where South Alabama has picked up 5 of their 6 wins. Wednesday 2/22 the Jags play Georgia Southern and Friday 2/26 when Troy comes to Mobile. Both tips are set for 7 pm.

South Alabama Baseball Hosts The Jaguar Classic

South Alabama baseball opens the 2023 season at Stanky Field, as the Jags host the Jaguar Classic. On day one of the classic the Jags took on Northwestern State. South Alabama would win. The final score 3-2.

Jeremy Lee made his 2023 pitching debut, after missing last year due to an injury. Lee did not disappoint, pitching 5 2/3 innings giving up 2 hits on two unearned runs striking out 8.

Northwestern State got the scoring started with two outs in the top of the 6th. taking a 2-0 lead.

The Jags would answer back in the bottom of the 6th. Colson Lawrence singled to left. Lawerence then stole 2nd on the next pitch. Will Turner walks and Mitchell Heer singles to center. Lawerence would score on a wild pitch. Jags trailed at the end of the 6th innings 2-1.
The Jags would continue to score in the bottom of the 7th. Joseph Sullivan was able to score on a wild pitch tying the game 2-2. Will Turner would single to center scoring Lawerence. The Jags would lead 3-2.

Mathew DeLano would get the win coming into relieve Lee. Delano pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out 2 on no hits and no runs. Grant Wood would pick up the save for the Jags. Jaguar pitchers only gave up 2 hits on the day.

South Alabama is 1-0 on the season despite playing some sloppy defense. Trey Lewis has 4 errors in the game at shortstop and Diego Altamirano had one at catcher.

The paid attendance for the game was 1,217 people.

the Jags play a doubleheader tomorrow as the take on Eastern Kentucky at 3pm and then about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
