Jaguar Men’s Basketball Adds Transfers To Roster

Jaguar men’s basketball adds transfers to roster. As coach Riley looks to replace depth from last year.

South Alabama men’s basketball ended their 2022-2023 season in a 66-71 loss to Louisiana in the Sunbelt Conference Tournament. The Jaguars lost key players Isaiah Moore, Greg Parham, Kevin Samuel, Owen White and fan favorite Adam Sizemore to graduation. Dianne Smith and Tyler Shirley have chosen to enter the transfer portal.

The Jaguars have added three new transfers to the their roster for the upcoming season. South Alabama adds guards Samuel Tabe and Maxwell Land and forward Thomas Howell. All three will be eligible to play in the 2023-2024 season.

Samuel Tabe comes to the Jaguars by way of Seton Hill. Seton Hill is a division 2 school located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. At Seton Hill, Tabe average 16.4 points a game and averaged 8.2 rebounds each game.

Maxwell Land transfer from Saint Francis University, averaged 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds a game at Saint Francis. During 2022-2023 at Saint Francis, Land shot 36% from the three point line and was 76% in free-throws.

The Jaguars also picked up transfer Thomas Howell. Howell is no stranger to the Sunbelt Conference, coming from conference foe Louisiana-Monroe. Howell averaged 9.5 points and 8 rebounds a game this past season.

Both Land and Howell have two years of eligibility, while Tabe will have one year of eligibility. In addition to these recent transfers, the Jaguars have three high school signees: guards John Broom of Jacksonville High School (Jacksonville, AL), Smurf Millender of Clear Brook High School (Friendswood, TX) and forward Ethan Kiser of Metamora High School (Metamora, IL).

Jaguar Basketball Falls Just Short In Sun Belt Conference Finals

Jaguar basketball falls just short in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament finals. The final score 71-66. The Jags played with a high amount energy and led for a good majority of the game. Isaiah Moore was lights out tonight. Owen White had a great look for the final shot of the game. White circle around a screen and stepped back from the 3 point line about 2 steps to create some space and received the pass. Owen fired off the three that looked like it was headed in, but instead it bounced around the rim and went out. Breaking the hearts of the players, the Jag fans in attendance and those watching at home.

The game started off the same way the past two games have. The Jags would come out scoring fast. South would lead 5-0 at the 18:26 mark of the first half. Louisiana would get it going offensively. Going on a 5-0 run getting the Jaguars lead down to two points, but the Jaguars would answer back with a run of their own. The Jaguars and the Ragin Cajuns would square off in an epic tournament battle. South would go up 6 points then Louisiana would come back getting ahead by 3 and the Jags would surge back in front. The Jaguars would lead 37-33 at halftime.

Isaiah Moore had 16 of the Jags 37 points at halftime.

The second half start off with more of the same. The Jags would increase the lead to 7 points, the score was 40-33 1:55 into the second half. Louisiana would get the lead again 47-46 with 12:36 left in the game. Fortunately the Jaguars would not fall behind by more than 6 for rest of the game. Unfortunately the Jags would never get the lead again. The Jags would scratch and claw and get the deficit to 1 point with 17 seconds left. Louisiana would push the lead to 3 points. That would set up South Alabama for the last shot with 13 seconds left. Owen White would inbound the ball to Isaiah Moore, who would work the ball down the court, and pass it to White for the three that fell just short. The Jaguars were forced to foul and that would wrap it up.

The Jaguars leading scorers were…

Isaiah Moore- 33 points and 1 rebound

Kevin Samuel- 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Tyrell “Turbo” Jones- 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Owen White was quiet tonight- 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Louisiana is a great team and should be given all of the credit. The Jaguars had their chances but they couldn’t capitalize on all of them.

South Alabama’s record falls to 19-16 overall. We will have to wait and see if the Jags get any kind of smaller post season tournament invites. Like the Basketball Classic from last year.

To make the accomplishment even more memorable. It happened on Senior Day.

The Jags got off to a slow start, which hasn’t been the case for the pat hand full of games. South was down 6 points 10-4 at the 13;29 mark of the 1st half. After a timeout where Coach Richie Riley challenged his team, they responded by going on a 15-0 run. In the second half it was more of the same. South Alabama kept its foot on the gas. The lead would increase throughout the rest of the game. It would get as high as 39 with 1:37 left to play, before ending the game as a 36 point victory.

The Jags were led by…

Greg Paham II- who came off the bench and, played 25 minutes had 19 points and 1 rebound.

Jamar Franklin- who also came off the bench, and played 23 minutes had 12 points and 3 rebounds.

Isaiah Moore- finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds

South Alabama shot 56.1 % overall and 50% from behind the 3 point line.

The Jaguars improved their record to 15-14 and 8-8 in the conference. South Alabama has won 4 in a row and 7 out of their last 8. The Jags have climbed in the standings and would now be the 7th seed in the tournament, if it was played today. They are getting hot at the right time.

Next up for Jaguar basketball

The Jags are on the road for the final two games of the regular season. The Jags travel to Texas St Wednesday at 7pm and then Lafayette on Friday to take on the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. This game will be nationally televised on ESPN 2 at 8pm to close out the regular season schedule.
