South Alabama Has a Dominate Performance Over Southern Miss

If you look up the word dominance in the dictionary, It says the definition is controlling power or influence over others. That is exactly what happened Thursday night at the Mitchell Center. The Jags exerted their dominance over Southern Miss winning by 31. The final 85-54. The 54 points scored were the lowest scored by Southern Miss this season.

The 2nd half was more of the same. The Jag lead would balloon to 34 with 18 seconds left in the game. The lead would drop to 31 after a 3 pointer to wrap up the scoring.

Southern Miss shot 40.4% for the game, and just 23.5% from 3 point range. The Golden Eagles record dropped to 23-5 on the year, and 12-3 in the Sun Belt Conference. Which is still good for first place in the conference. In an odd stat, all 5 of USM’s losses have come on the road.

South Alabama wraps up the non conference schedule versus Hartford

The South Alabama Jaguars wrap up the non conference schedule beating the Hartford Hawks by the final of 77-53. This was the first ever match up between the Jaguars and the independent Hawks.

This game was a mismatch from the beginning. The Jags scored first, sixteen seconds into the game on a jumper in the paint by Kevin Samuel, and never looked back. The Hawks hit a three pointer at the 13:19 mark of the first half to get within 5 at 16-11. That is as close as the Hawks would get for the rest of the game.

South Alabama would build a steady lead. The Jags would lead by 11 at halftime the score was 38-27.

Both teams teams came out a little cold. The Jags didn’t score in the second half until the 18:24 mark. Hartford went scoreless for the first 4:35 of the 2nd half, hitting a three to cut the Jag lead to 17 at 46-29 . That score stopped a Jaguar 10-2 scoring run.

South Alabama would slowly increase the lead throughout the rest of the second half to twenty on two different occasions. The Jags would increase the lead to 25 points at 77-52 with 28 seconds left.

South Alabama’s leading scorer on the night were….

The Jags shot 52.5% overall and 36.4% from 3 point land. Hartford shot 38.3% overall and 29.4% from behind the arc.

Game Notes:

South Alabama Men’s basketball to begin a big four game home stand

My logo

The South Alabama men’s basketball team begins an extremely important four game home stand, starting Saturday 5 pm at the Mitchell Center. There is still uncertainty with the Jags season as far as seeding and where they could end up. As of today the Jags are tied with Texas St. for 10th place in the Sunbelt Conference. While the chance of the winning the regular season championship are at zero percent. They can however play for better seeding for the upcoming conference tournament.

The Jags have a tough game to start the home stand. App State is currently sitting in a four way tie for 5th place. The Mountaineers have an overall record of 14-12 and 7-6 in the Sunbelt. App St is lead by…

Donovan Gregory- 11.9 PPG and 4.1 RPG

Tyree Boykin- 11.6 PPG and 2.8 RPG

Terence Harcum- 11.0 PPG and 2.4 RPG

The Mountaineers as a team are averaging 70.9 points per game and giving up 63.5 PPG. App St is averaging 36.4 rebounds per game and shooting 33.4% from the three point line.

South Alabama is lead by….

Isaiah Moore- 18.8 PPG and 3.4 RPG

Kevin Samuel- 10.4 PPG and 9.3 RPG

Tyrell “Turbo” Jones- 9.9 PPG and 3.3 RPG

The Jags are averaging 69.6 points per game. Interestingly enough the Jags are giving up 66.9 points per game. That means that the Jags are playing in a lot of very close games. They are shooting 45.4 % as a team, 33.0 rebounds per game and 32.2 % behind the three point line.

The Jags only have 6 game’s remaining, 4 home games, and only 5 games left in conference play. So every game from here on out, is very important leading up to conference play. Like I stated before this home stand will be difficult it includes a game vs Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are in first place in the Sunbelt Conference. They close out the home schedule vs ULM.

South Alabama Men’s basketball wins at Arkansas State

South Alabama men’s basketball team is now on a two game winning streak. The Jaguars beat Arkansas St by the final of 82-62, picking up just their second road win of the season.

The game was never really in doubt. As the Jags took control of the game early and didn’t let up. There was only one tie in the game. Just, forty one seconds into the game the score was tied 2-2, after that the Jags never trailed.

South Alabama built a very comfortable lead in the 1st half, leading 44-30 at halftime. The Jaguars went into the half shooting 64% from the field and 62.5% from 3 point range. The Jags would continue to shoot 50% from the floor in the second half. They cooled off quite a bit behind the 3 point line shooting just 18% for the 2nd half.

The Jags would let Arkansas St cut the lead 9 at 44-35 with 18:19 left in the game. South Alabama would then slam the door on the Red Wolves, and extend the lead to 27 at 82-55 with 3:03 left in the game.

The Jags leading scorers were…

Isaiah Moore 23 points and 2 rebounds

Kevin Samuel 20 points and 7 rebounds

Owen White 11 points ( 9 from 3 point land ) and 4 rebounds

The Jaguars are playing for seeding in the Sunbelt Conference Tournament, with an overall record of 10-13 and 4-7 in conference play, are a 12 seed. If the Jags continue to win they could squeeze out a top 10 seed. That, is a very good possibility with seven conference games remaining. The Jags just need to continue to put the wins together and take care of their own business. There are still some tough games left. The Jaguars will continue their three game road trip by going to ULM Saturday, February 4th, and after that a rematch at Troy February 9th.
