South Alabama Jaguars men’s basketball takes on Old Dominion

The South Alabama Jaguars mens basketball team returns home to start a two game home stand. The Jags return to ”The Mitch” Thursday January 26th to take on Old Dominion at 7pm.

Old Dominion, 3-5 in their return to the Sun Belt Conference and 11-9 overall, is averaging 68.0 points per game.

The Monarchs are led by Tyreek Scott-Grayson who is averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds, and just shy of 3 assists per game. As a team ODU is shooting 33.3% from 3 point land.

The Monarchs went 1-1 last week with a win over Georgia St 77-58 and a loss to App St 72-58.

The Jags come into the game with a 2-6 in the Sun Belt and 8-12 overall. South is averaging 69.4 points per game.

They are led by Isaiah Moores 17.9 ppg and Kevin Samuels who has 5 double doubles in the past 6 games.

The Jags are shooting 32.2% from 3 point land.

The Jags are currently 13th in the league standings. If the Jags are going to make a run, it needs to start with this game. There are only eleven games left. Ten of those remaining games are conference games.

South Alabama women’s basketball snaps a seven game losing streak vs Texas State

The South Alabama women’s basketball team snapped their seven game losing streak versus Texas State at “The Mitch” on Saturday January 21, 2023. The final 45-43. With the win, the Jags also picked up their first conference victory.

The Bobcat’s 43 points scored, and 30 rebounds were both the lowest totals put up against the Jags this season. There were six ties and eight lead changes in the game.

The leading scorers for the Jags were….

Kelsey Thompson-17 points 6 double figure scoring game this season for the freshman. Thompson also added a career high with eight field goals.

Kiana Anderson- 9 points and 7 rebounds

Nadia Howard- 9 points 8 rebounds

With the win South Alabama improved its record to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the Sunbelt Conference.

The Jags will be on the road for their next two games. They travel to Troy on Thursday night January 26th at 6pm. On Saturday January 28th the Jags will go to Louisiana Monroe game time 2pm.

South Alabama Men’s Basketball loses in overtime at Coastal Carolina

In what turned out to be a very streaky game, the Jags lose another Sun Belt Conference game 85-81 in OT on the road at CCU.

South Alabama came out cold again. The Jags didn’t score their first points until nearly four minutes into the game. Coastal Carolina built an early 17-4 lead with about 12 minutes left in the first half. The Jags would however get it together and go on a 12-2 run over the next 1:54 cutting the lead to three points at 19-16.

Coastal then would immediately go on another run of 16-4 to increase their lead to 37-22. South would trail at halftime 41-28.

The Jags would come out of halftime and go on another run, cutting the lead down to three trailing 35-32. Coastal would get the lead back up to 14 at the 10:14 mark of the 2nd half. South would trail 58-44.

South Alabama would chip away the rest of the 2nd half tying the game at 68 on a 3 pointer by Tyrell “ Turbo” Jones with just :48 seconds left. Neither team would score again and the game went to overtime.

In OT the Jags would take their first lead of the game at the 4:49 mark, on another three pointer from Turbo. The score was 71-68.

The two teams would go back and forth for the next few minutes until Coastal hit a 3 pointer and the Jags would trail by 4 the score 78-74 with 2:27 left in OT. The Jags would get the deficit down to one at the 2:01 mark, on a three pointer by Isaiah Moore. That’s is as close as the Jags would get. Final 85-81.


The leading scorers for the Jags were…

Turbo Jones- 25 points including 6-13 from the 3 point line.

Isaiah Moore- 19 points including 3-5 from 3 point land.

Kevin Samuel- 12 points 2 rebounds for another double double.

Jamar Franklin- 8 points making his second straight start of the year.

The Jags shot 3 pointers at 40% and overall 46% from the field. The Jags record falls to 8-12 overall and 2-6 in the Sunbelt Conference. The next 2 games for South Alabama will be home games. Thursday January 26, 2023 Old Dominion comes to “The Mitch”, game time 7 pm. Troy comes to town Saturday at 3pm.

South Alabama basketball finished up their latest home stand versus Louisiana

The Jags played the final game of a tough 4 game home stand vs Louisiana on Saturday January 14th 2023. The Jaguars fell short losing to Louisiana 79-76. South Alabama played without their starting center Kevin Samuel, who was out with a knee injury. Marshall Kearing stepped in to make his first start of the year. Kearing had a career high 15 points and seven rebounds. He scored the Jags first 9 points including a three pointer.

The game was a hard fought one. The Jags would get out to a 10 point lead with about a minute left until halftime only to have the Ragin Cajuns come back and take the lead in the 2nd half. There were 7 ties and 11 lead changes throughout the game.

Double digit scorers for the Jags, other than Kearing were…

Isaiah Moore led the Jags with 21 points.
Judah Brown had 12 points
Jamar Franklin finished with 10 points.

The Jags fall to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the Sun Belt. Louisiana improves to 14-4 overall and 4-2 in the Sun Belt South Alabama returns to action on Thursday January 19th when they travel to Southern Miss game time 7pm
