South Alabama Football adds more depth on National Signing Day

The South Alabama football team was busy again building depth on National Signing Day.

PJ Martin- Running Back from LaSalle High School in New Orleans. Martin helped his team to an undefeated regular season and was a 4A first team selection.

LaDareyan Craig- transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast played high school football in Mobile Alabama at Baker High School. Where he earned All-American status.

These four mid-year transfers also joined the class…

Reed Buys- offensive line transfer from Mississippi State. Buys started his college career at Jones Community College. Where his playing time was cut short by an injury in 2019.

Jordan Davis- Offensive Line transfer from SEC school South Carolina. Davis played high school football at Creekside High School in Georgia. Where he earned All-State honors as a tackle for the O-line.

Kentrel Bullock- Running back from Ole Miss. where he had very limited playing time. He was ranked as a 4 star Mississippi high school recruit where he rushed for just shy of 2000 yards and 33 touchdowns his senior year.

Javon Ivory- A transfer from Memphis, Ivory a native of Grove Hill Alabama had 586 yards last year on 46 receptions.

These signees join the 12 Early Signing Day players from back in December.

South Alabama men’s basketball beats Troy

After yet another close loss on Thursday night. Coach Richie Riley challenged his team to show up and play for an entire game. The South Alabama men’s basketball team responded by beating their in-state rival Troy 77-60 at “The Mitch”. South Alabama led the entire game. Coach Riche Riley improves to 8-1 all time and 5-0 at home versus Troy.

Owen White got the Jags going tonight scoring the first five points of the game. Isaiah Moore then scored the next three. The Jags would get out to an 8-0 lead. The Jags would lead 37-25 at halftime. The lead would grow to 18 with 4 minutes to go. Then to 20 with 1:30 to go. South would score 46 points in the paint. The most against any D1 opponent this year.

Tyrell Jones 11 points and 3 rebounds

Kevin Samuel 10 points and 13 rebounds (6 offensive rebounds were a season high) 8th double double of the season

South Alabama shot 52% from the floor and 46% from 3 point land Troy shot 41% from the floor and 3 point land.

The Jags improve their record to 9-13 overall and 3-7 in the Sun Belt Conference. South has gain a spot to 12th place in the Sun Belt. This win is exactly what the Jags needed to get some confidence and to right the ship.

The South Alabama men’s basketball team returns to play Thursday February 2nd at 7 pm in Jonesboro Arkansas to face Arkansas St. with the first of three straight road games.

South Alabama women’s basketball falls late to ULM

South Alabama women’s basketball led 56-46 at the end of the 3rd quarter at Monroe Louisiana. The Warhawks went 7-0 run cutting the Jags lead to three. ULM then took the lead with 3 minutes left in the game. Then they took the lead for good with just over 2 minutes left. The final score Jaguars lose 69-65.

Kelsey Thompson poured in a career high with 27 points for the Jags. Thompson has scored in double figures for the seventh time this year. Zena Elias scored 10 points and 11 rebounds. Her second double double of her career.

ULM had 4 players score double digits.

South Alabama women’s basketball travels to ULM-Preview

South Alabama women’s basketball concludes their 2 game road trip with a visit to Louisiana- Monroe Saturday January 28th at 2pm

The Jags are coming off a loss at their in-state rival Troy. The Jags have lost seven of their last 8. South is also 1-8 on the road.

ULM, 6-14 overall and 2-7 in the Sun Belt, has lost 5 straight. Their latest loss on Thursday coming versus Marshall, and 7 out of their last 8. The Warhawks are 5-7 at home this season.

South Alabama men’s basketball takes on in-state rival Troy- Preview

South Alabama men’s basketball concludes its two game home stand Saturday January 28th at 3 pm, when Troy comes to “The Mitch”. The Jags are trying to snap a 4 game losing streak.

This will be the first of two games between the Jags and the Trojans this season. Last season the two teams split the series 1-1. The home teams won both games. South won 82-63 which is the largest margin of victory in the series. Troy won the rematch two days later at Troy 77-68. The Jags lead the overall series 26-12. That included a seven game win streak for the South, which Troy snapped in their last meeting.

This season the Jags are struggling. They have an overall record of 8-13, and are in 13th place right now in the Sun Belt Conference. They have a record of just 2-7 in conference play.

South Alabama loses close game against Old Dominion

The men’s basketball game between South Alabama and Old Dominion was another close game with a familiar result. The Jags lose the game in the closing minute. The final at the Mitchell Center 66-64.

The Jaguars were down by nine, 43-34, close to five minutes into the 2nd half. South was able to get back into the game down by two with 11:35 left in the game. Old Dominion pushed the lead to six, with less than eight minutes to go. South would get back into the game again, finally grab the lead with 1:35 left in the game.

The lead changed hands 3 times in the final minute. The Jags had a chance to tie or win the game with 4 seconds left. Greg Parham II shot a the three pointer from about halfway between the top of the three point line and half court. The ball bounced off of the backboard, and the rim as time expired.

Tyrell “Turbo” Jones scored 11 points and 3 rebounds

South Alabama had 26 turnovers. The Jags were out scored in the paint. The South Alabama bench out scored ODU’s bench 28-24. There were five ties and 11 total lead changes in the game.

The loss drops the Jags record to 8-14 and 2-7 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Jags are currently in 13th place in the SBC with 10 games remaining. The next game for the South Alabama is on Saturday January 28th at “The Mitch” against in-state rival Troy at 3pm. If the Jags are going to make a run it needs to start Saturday.

South Alabama Jaguar Women’s basketball loses at Troy

South Alabama Jaguars women’s basketball team traved on the road tonight January 26th 2023 to play their in-state rival Troy. The Final score… The Jags lose to a much more powerful Troy team 81-62.

South Alabama was led by Kiana Anderson’s 13 points and 9 rebounds. Michiyah Simmons scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds. That was not enough as the Jags as a team shot just 28.6% The Jags were out scored in the paint 30-14 and also in 2nd chance points 17-3.


Troy was led by Ja’Mia Hollings who had a double double with 23 points and 20 rebounds, and Makayia Hallmon’14 points and 5 rebounds.

South Alabama drops to 5-15 overall and 1-8 in the Sun Belt Conference. Troy improved to 12-8 overall and 7-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Jags continue their two game road trip by traveling to ULM Saturday at 2.

South Alabama women’s basketball on road at Troy

The South Alabama women’s basketball team is on the road for two games this week. On Thursday January 26th 2023 the Jags travel to in-state rival Troy.

South is coming off it’s first conference win of the season which broke a 17 game conference losing streak dating back to last season and it’s 1st win in 8 games.

The Jags are led by sophomore Nadia Howard and freshman Kelsey Thompson. The latter is ranked 17th in the conference in rebounds per game and 15th in steals per game.

The Jags are 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the Sun Belt Conference which has them tied with Arkansas St. for last place in the conference. South is also 1-8 on the road.

South Alabama women’s basketball is 24-33 overall vs Troy which includes a 6 game losing streak currently.

South averages 54.7 points per game. Troy is averaging 82.2 South is shooting 34.2 % and 27.2 % from three point range. Troy is shooting 38.6% and 30.3% from three point range.

After the game against Troy, the Jags will continue their road trip on Saturday January 28th going to ULM.

South Alabama Jaguars men’s basketball takes on Old Dominion

The South Alabama Jaguars mens basketball team returns home to start a two game home stand. The Jags return to ”The Mitch” Thursday January 26th to take on Old Dominion at 7pm.

Old Dominion, 3-5 in their return to the Sun Belt Conference and 11-9 overall, is averaging 68.0 points per game.

The Monarchs are led by Tyreek Scott-Grayson who is averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds, and just shy of 3 assists per game. As a team ODU is shooting 33.3% from 3 point land.

The Monarchs went 1-1 last week with a win over Georgia St 77-58 and a loss to App St 72-58.

The Jags come into the game with a 2-6 in the Sun Belt and 8-12 overall. South is averaging 69.4 points per game.

They are led by Isaiah Moores 17.9 ppg and Kevin Samuels who has 5 double doubles in the past 6 games.

The Jags are shooting 32.2% from 3 point land.

South Alabama women’s basketball snaps a seven game losing streak vs Texas State

The South Alabama women’s basketball team snapped their seven game losing streak versus Texas State at “The Mitch” on Saturday January 21, 2023. The final 45-43. With the win, the Jags also picked up their first conference victory.

The Bobcat’s 43 points scored, and 30 rebounds were both the lowest totals put up against the Jags this season. There were six ties and eight lead changes in the game.

The leading scorers for the Jags were….

Kelsey Thompson-17 points 6 double figure scoring game this season for the freshman. Thompson also added a career high with eight field goals.

Kiana Anderson- 9 points and 7 rebounds

Nadia Howard- 9 points 8 rebounds

With the win South Alabama improved its record to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the Sunbelt Conference.

The Jags will be on the road for their next two games. They travel to Troy on Thursday night January 26th at 6pm. On Saturday January 28th the Jags will go to Louisiana Monroe game time 2pm.
