Jaguar Baseball Struggles With Nebraska

South Alabama Jaguar baseball struggles with Nebraska. The Cornhusker’s come to Stanky Field for the first time ever and take the first two games of the series, in very convincing fashion. Nebraska came into the series with a record of 0-3-1. They were beaten by San Diego three games (7-3, 5-3, 10-9) and taken to the very limit in game 4. The game was called after 7 innings because of a travel curfew tied 16-16.

Game 1 Friday Nebraska vs Jags

The Jags would lose 5-4 to Nebraska. The Nebraska pitching staff, which was beaten around in San Diego, has gotten it together in Mobile. Their offense continued to shine. The Jags would battle but it would not be enough. Nebraska scored one in the second on a solo homer to left center. The Jags would answer right back in the bottom of the second with 2 runs. Jags led 2-1.

In the top of the third. Nebraska would pick up 2 more runs on 2 hits, and 1 hit by pitch, and lead 3-2.

In the top of the 5th Nebraska would extend the lead by one, on 2 walks, a hit by pitch The Jags would trail 4-2.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Jags would draw closer. Coleson Lawerence would smack a solo homer to left center. South Alabama still trailed 4-3.

Nebraska would pick up another run in the top of the 6th, on 1 walk no hits and 2 HBP’s Jags trail 5-3.

In the bottom of the 6th the Jags would pick up 1 run on 0 hits, 1 walk and 2 HBP’s. Jags would trail 5-4. That score would hold up to be the final score.

Game 2- Nebraska vs Jags

This one got ugly quick for South Alabama. In the top of the second, Nebraska picks up 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors by 3rd baseman Mitchell Heer.

South would answer in the bottom of the 2nd, picking up 1 run on an RBI single from Colson Lawrence. Jags trailed 4-1.

Top 3rd Nebraska scores again. This time on a double steal. South Alabama trailed 5-1.

Moving to the top of the 5th inning. Nebraska would pick up two runs on a home run to left center. The lead would be extended to 7-1.

The Jags once again would try to answer back again in the bottom of the 5th. With 1 out JG Bell would single through the left side. Erick Orbeta would then double, advancing Bell to third. Hunter Donaldson would pinch hit for Heer, grounding out to first scoring Bell. Will Turner would come to the plate with 2 outs. Turner would hit an RBI double to right. Cole Ketzner would strike out to end the inning. Jags would pull to within four runs trailing 7-3.

That would be as close as the Jags could get. South Alabama would only get 3 more hits the rest of the game. Nebraska, however was not done yet.

In the top of the 6th, Nebraska would add one run and lead 8-3

In the top of the 7th Nebraska would unload on Jaguar pitching, plating 6 runs on 3 hits. Which included a three run homer. Nebraska would lead 14-3.

That score would hold up until the final out was made. Gehrig Conrad would take the loss. Conrad’s record would fall to 0-2, giving up 5 runs (only 1 of those earned), 5 hits, and 7 strikeouts. South Alabamas sloppy fielding continued. The Jaguars committed 5 more errors. Three by 3rd baseman Heer. As a side note the Jags have committed 13 errors as a team through 7 games.

The Jags record falls to 4-3 overall and have lost 2 straight. Nebraska has won the series. The Jags look to avoid the sweep on Sunday. Game time is at 1 pm.
