Jaguar Baseball Can’t Get It Done Against New Orleans

Jaguar baseball can’t get it done against New Orleans. It was a game the Jags needed to win, to keep the great momentum going. A five run fifth inning is what seemed to take the air out of the Jags. The Jags would claw back, but couldn’t close the game out. The final score 6-5.

How It Happened

The Jags and Privateers battled to a 0-0 tie, through 4 innings. Caden Homniok started the game going 3 innings allowing 0 runs on 0 hits, walking 1 and striking out 2. Jake Bruning would come in to relieve Homniok. Bruning had a clean 4th, but then gave up 5 earned runs in the 5th, including 3 home runs by the Privateers. Bruning exited the game with 2 outs in the 5th.

In the bottom of the 5th the Jags would try to answer back. Joseph Sullivan would strike out to lead off the inning. Tyler Borges would single to left, that would bring Colson Lawrence to the plate. Lawerence would smash a 2 run homer to left field. Cole Ketzner and Austin Thasher would both fly out to end the inning. In the inning the Jags get 2 runs on 2 hits, trailed 5-2.

In the top of the 6th New Orleans picked up 1 run on 1 hit, and extended the lead to 6-2.

Moving into the bottom of the eighth. The Jaguars tried to get something going offensively. Erick Orbeta led off the inning with a walk. Bell singled through the left side. Will Turner would come to the plate with 2 on and nobody out. Turner would hit an rbi single up the middle, scoring Orbeta. DK Donaldson, who pinch hit for Micah Morgan would hit into a double play. Sullivan would end the inning, by fouling out to 3rd. In the inning the Jaguars get one run on 2 hits. South Alabama trails 6-2.

In the bottom of the 9th, it was do or die for the Jaguars. Borges lined out to shortstop, for the first out. Lawerence was hit by a pitch. Ketzner would single to right field. That would bring up Thrasher with 2 on and one out. Thrasher hit an rbi single to the left side. Orbeta walked to load the bases. Bell would step to the plate, hitting an rbi single to left. The bases remain loaded with Turner up. Turner would pop out and DK Donaldson would ground out to end the game. In the inning the Jaguars got 2 runs on 3 hits and lose the game final score 6-5.

Game Stats

J G Bell went 2 for 4 with an rbi. He also made a costly error in the sixth. What turned out to be the winning run scored on the play.

Will Turner went 1 for 4 with an rbi.

Colson Lawerence went 1 for 2 with 2 rbi and 2 runs scored.

Austin Thrasher went 2 for 4 with an rbi.

Bryan’s Takes

The pitching mistakes and defensive miscues made yet another appearance tonight. Bruning giving up 5 runs in the 5th and JG Bell’s team leading 12th error of the season. Turned out to be the game deciding error. There is some extremely strong Sun Belt teams coming up on the schedule. Troy, Southern Miss, and Coastal Carolina. The Jaguars really need to win these sandwich type games to improve their chances down the road come tournament time. In order for the Jags to get into a regional, they will all but certainly have to win the tournament. The RPI was around 110 before this loss and will most certainly drop further, after it.

Game Two Saturday @ 2 pm It’s Alumni day and The “Yard Sale” will also happen that day.

Game Three Sunday @ 1pmi

Jaguar Men’s Basketball Adds Transfers To Roster

Jaguar men’s basketball adds transfers to roster. As coach Riley looks to replace depth from last year.

South Alabama men’s basketball ended their 2022-2023 season in a 66-71 loss to Louisiana in the Sunbelt Conference Tournament. The Jaguars lost key players Isaiah Moore, Greg Parham, Kevin Samuel, Owen White and fan favorite Adam Sizemore to graduation. Dianne Smith and Tyler Shirley have chosen to enter the transfer portal.

The Jaguars have added three new transfers to the their roster for the upcoming season. South Alabama adds guards Samuel Tabe and Maxwell Land and forward Thomas Howell. All three will be eligible to play in the 2023-2024 season.

Samuel Tabe comes to the Jaguars by way of Seton Hill. Seton Hill is a division 2 school located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. At Seton Hill, Tabe average 16.4 points a game and averaged 8.2 rebounds each game.

Jaguar baseball takes series versus Georgia State. That would be the fourth consecutive series the Jags have won. The final from Sunday’s Jaguar win was 7-2

How It Happened

The Jaguars got their bats going in the bottom of the second. Tyler Borges popped up to shortstop for the first out. Micah Morgan was hit by the pitch. Diego Altamirano would hit an rbi double to left center, and made it to third on the throw home. Morgan would come all the way around from first to score on the play. That would bring Thrasher to the plate. Thrasher would hit an rbi single to left field.

With one out and one on, Erick Orbeta would lay down a sac bunt to third base for the second out. Thrasher advanced to second. JG Bell stepped up to the plate, and hit an rbi single to right, scoring Thrasher. Will Turner was up next. Turner singled to right, and Trey Lewis lined out to left to retire the side. This inning the Jaguars picked up 3 runs on 4 hits, and lead 3-0.

In the top of the third, the Panthers picked up 1 run on 1 hit, and trail the Jags 3-1.

In the bottom of the third. The Jaguars keep the pressure on. Joseph Sullivan grounded out to the pitcher for out one. Borges walked and Morgan singled through the right side of the infield. That brought up Altamirano, who hit a two rbi double down the left field line. Thrasher would line out to first base, for out two. After a pitching change for Georgia State, Orbeta would foul out to end the inning. In the inning the Jags would get 2 runs on 2 hits, and increase the lead to 5-1.

Moving to the bottom of the fifth, the Jags threatened to score again. Sullivan would walk to lead off the inning. Borges would come to the plate. Sullivan stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher. Borges walked and Morgan fouled out to third base for the first out. Altamirano walked. After a Georgia State pitching change. Thrasher reached on a fielders choice, picking up the rbi as Sullivan scored. After Georgia State changed pitchers again, Orbeta flew out to center field to end the inning. That score would hold as the final score was 7-2.

Game Stats

Jeremy Lee threw 6 strong innings, winning his second consecutive game, and improved his record to 2-5. Lee gave up just 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 8 and walking 4 on 105 pitches.

Grant Wood came in to relieve Jackson Boyd who looked good in his two innings. Wood went 1 inning giving up no runs on no hits, striking out 1 on just 8 pitches.

Will Turner went 3 for 3 with 2 walks and 1 run scored.

Diego Altamirano went 2 for 3 with 3 rbis with 1 run scored and 1 walk.

Bryan’s Takes

The Jaguars are playing much better as a team. They seemed to have figured out how to out score any type of pitching issues they may have. The offense is really clicking. The Jags have won 10 of of the last 13 games, and 11 out of the last 15 games. The Jags are in a great position for the latter part of the season. Currently the Jaguars are sitting in 8th place in the Sun Belt Conference. Since, there is so much conference parody. The Jaguars also find themselves only one game back of third place. They are two games back of second place in the conference.

Jeremy Lee had his second straight great start, coming back from his injury. He seems to have turned a big corner in his comeback. South Alabama has 14 regular season games left to get as many wins as possible under their belts. They are most likely going to have to win the Sun Belt Conference Championship to get in to a regional with an RPI near 110. The Jags climbed 23 spots after the win today. If you want to keep track of all teams RPI click the link below.

In 2021 Coach Jackson was highlighted by Sports Illustrated and Empower Onyx in the series 100 Influential Black Women in Sports. This series focused on Black women in all sports who were making an impact in their communities and who are vital in developing the future generation of leaders in the community.

Coach Jackson has already started assembling her staff at South Alabama. Eryc Pittman was announced as an assistant coach on Coach Jackson’s staff. Coach Pittman spent two seasons at Austin Peay as an assistant coach. At Austin Peay, the Governors had a 37-25 record in two seasons and went to the Women’s Basketball Invitational in 2022. Coach Pittman was at Jacksonville State for six seasons where he coordinated scouting reports and recruiting. Before Jacksonville State, Coach Pittman was at Brewton-Parker College, Abbey College and was a Grad Assistant at Eastern Kentucky.

Jackson also added former Jag player and grad assistant Colby Davis. Davis spent the past two seasons at FAMU as an assistant coach.

Davis began her coaching career at Pearl River, where she was responsible for recruiting and film breakdowns, while developing guards and post players. Davis was a GA at South Alabama. In 2019-2020 she helped the Jaguars get the the Sun Belt Conference semifinals and Quarterfinals in 2020-2021.

At  the end of the  2022-2023 women’s basketball season, the Jags were 7-23 and the program has only one NCAA appearance in its history. Coach Jackson is ready to “raise the bar”.  She feels that the Jags have the talent to become successful, but says it is a “process” and will take time. The future looks bright for the Jaguars.

Bryan’s Takes

The red hot Jags continue to win games. They have won 6 straight. There are only 7 more regular season games left. After the Sunday series finale vs Georgia Southern, the Jags have a road series vs Southern Miss and a large series at Jaguar Field vs Troy to close out the regular season.
The Jags are having a stellar season. They have a pretty stable offense and a great 1-2 punch on the pitching staff with Lackie and Hardy. The Jaguars have a great shot to make a lot of noise in the Sun Belt Tournament coming up on May 10th. The Jags are currently in 3rd place in the Sun Belt Conference.

Jaguar Baseball Evens The Series

Jaguar baseball evens the series. The final score 5-2. One day after being embarrassed on their home field, losing 15-5 thanks to some sloppy play on both offense and defense. The Jaguars were look for a chance for redemption.

How It Happened

The Jaguars got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Erick Orbeta walked on four pitches to lead off the inning. JG Bell followed with a single to the right side. Will Turner gets hit by the pitch to load the bases. That would bring Trey Lewis to the plate with nobody out. Lewis reached on a fielders choice and picked up the rbi as Orbeta scored. Turner was out at second.
Joseph Sullivan came to the plate next. During the at bat, Bell would score on a wild pitch and Lewis would advance to second. “ Sully” would continue his at bat and walked. Tyler Borges would be next up, and also walk to load the bases again. Cole Ketzner would pop up for the second out. Austin Thrasher would hit the ball to third base. Sullivan would be forced out at third base for the final out of the inning. In the inning the Jaguars get 2 runs and led 2-0.

Moving to the bottom of the third, the Jags looked to extend their lead. Turner doubled to right center to lead off the inning. Lewis would walk and “ Sully” was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the third time in the game. Borges would get an rbi walk scoring Turner on the play. The bases would remain loaded with no outs. Ketzner would then strikeout and Thrasher would end the inning by grounding into a double play. In the inning the Jaguars picked up 1 run and led 3-0.

In the top of the fourth and fifth Georgia State would pick up one run each inning. That trimmed the Jags lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the fifth inning. The Jags add to the lead. Turner lead off the inning getting hit by a pitch, yet again. Trey Lewis stepped to the plate. After Turner advanced to second on a wild pitch, Lewis would fly out for the first out of the inning. That brought Sullivan to the plate. “Sully” would smack a 2 run home run to right. Borges then walked with one out. Ketzner flew out to center, for the second out. Thrasher was hit by a pitch and Lawrence would fly out to right, to end the inning. In the inning South Alabama picked up 2 runs and led 5-2.

That score would hold up and become the final. Jags win 5-2.

Game Stats

Mitchell Heer got the start and got the win. Improving his record to 3-1 on the season. Heer went 5 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits, striking out 7 and walking just 1.
Colson Lawrence came in to relieve Zach Wilingham. ( who was sandwiched by Heer and Lawerence). Coleson pitched 3 strong innings giving up just one hit, and no runs, walking just one. He is being extended some. His bat is struggling some on offense, but he could be a nice surprise in the pen going forward.

Joseph Sullivan was 1 for 1 with 2 RBIs with the home run included.

Georgia State pitchers hit 5 Jaguars today put that with the 4 batters hit yesterday. They have hit 9 Jaguars so far in this series with one game to go.

Defensively this team is

Bryan’s Takes

Heer is starting to get extended more as he goes along. I look for him to be a big shot in the arm, for the pitching staff. He has a great arm and his control is coming along nicely.

The South Alabama offense is getting better, but still needs a little more consistency especially with with runners on and less than two outs. I feel like they are close to going on a long run. The offense seems to be missing the big explosive power bat, that they have had in the past. An Ethan Wilson type hitter that was a deep threat at anytime.

The pitching is still the major issue. The Jaguars do not have a solid starting staff, that can execute both effectively or efficiently. The staff seems to get ahead of hitters ( eg . 0-2 or 1-2) but then loses the hitter via walks in key situations, or giving up a big hit. Hopefully Lee’s performance last time out will carry over to this week and help ignite this staff.

Pitching Staff Key Stats

The staff ERA is 6.13.

The staff only has 1 shutout. (13-0 vs Southern)

The staff has only 2 complete games.

The staff has given up 45 home runs this season.

Teams are batting .274 vs the Jags.

Offensive Key Stats

Team batting average . 278

Team Home runs 46. ( Will Turner 11, Sullivan and Lawerence with 10 each)

Defensive Key Stats

Team Errors ( JG Bell leads team with 11 errors)

Next Up

The Jags go for the series win tomorrow, which would be their 4 straight series win.

game time 1pm Sunday.
