South Alabama Basketball Moves On To The Semifinals

South Alabama basketball moves on to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, beating the number one seed Southern Miss. The final score 78-61. Owen White had himself a game, as the Jags took a one point deficit at halftime and turned it into a 17 point victory.

South Alabama started a little slow, getting on the board first (3-0) at the 18:35 mark.
grabbing a 6-0 lead before USM would get on the board. The Jaguars would trail by as much as 6 points (27-21) at the 2:54 mark of the 1st half. The Jags would answer back. Owen White would hit a big three pointer, to bring the Jaguars back to within a 1 point halftime deficit. The Jaguars trail 27-26.

As the second half gets going the Jaguars and Golden Eagles go back and forth. The Jags would grab a 5 point lead and Southern Miss would close the gap to 1. At the 8:47 mark Southern Miss took a two point lead with 8:47 left in the game. That would be the last time Southern Miss would lead. It was all Jags for the rest of the game.

South Alabama would build a steady lead of 19 with 2:07 remaining which included an 17-2 run by the Jaguars. They once again led by 19 with 58 seconds left in the game. The Jaguars would score 52 points in the second half to put the Golden Eagles away.

Despite the loss Southern Miss should still get an NIT bid. The Jags however would most likely have to win the tournament to advance to March Madness.

The Jags were led in scoring by…

Owen White- 23 points ( season high) including shooting 45% from the 3 point line, along with 6 rebounds.

Isaiah Moore- 17 points and 5 rebounds.

Kevin Samuel- 10 points and 5 rebounds.

South Alabama shot just 20% from the 3 point line in the 1st half. The second half however was a totally different story. The Jags would shoot 60% behind the 3 point line in the second half.

South Alabama’s record would improve to 18-15 overall. They move on to the Semifinals tomorrow versus James Madison at 5pm. James Madison moves on after beating the Jags other rival, Troy today in the 2nd quarterfinals game. The Jags beat JMU 63-62 earlier this season in a game played in Mobile. Kevin Samuel would block a last second layup to secure the Jaguar victory.

Jaguar Baseball Opens Up South Alabama Invitational With A Loss

Jaguar baseball opens up South Alabama Invitational with a loss to Pepperdine. The Jags got down early in this one, and couldn’t recover. The final score was 12-5.

Pepperdine came into this game with only 17 walks as a team, this season. On Friday night the Jags walked 7 Wave batters.

Pepperdine picked up 3 runs on a home run by Ryan Johnson in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Will Turner would hit a solo home run to right field with 2 outs. The Jaguars would trail 3-1 at the end of one.

In the top of the third, Pepperdine would get another 3 run home run, this time by Jack Basseer.

In the bottom of the inning JG Bell would hit a 2 RBI double down the right field line. Jags trailed 6-3 after 3 complete.

In the top of the fifth, Pepperdine would get one run and lead 7-3.

In the top of the sixth, Pepperdine would bust the game open. They picked up 4 more runs on 5 hits, and led 11-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Colson Lawerence would lead off the inning homering to center field on the 0-2 pitch. The Jags trail 11-4.

In the top of the eighth, Ryan Johnson would hit his second home run of the game for Pepperdine. Jags trailed 12-4.

The Jaguars would pick up 1 more run in the bottom of the 8th, on an RBI single by Turner. Jags would trail 12-5, and that score would be the final.

Jeremy Lee would pick up the loss.His record would fall to 0-2 on the year, only going 3 innings giving up 6 earned runs on just 3 hits. South Alabama’s record falls to 5-5 on the year.

Jaguar Softball Opens Play At Jane B. Memorial

Jaguar softball opens play at Jane B Memorial in Auburn Alabama today. Playing two games, the Jags went 1-1 on the day.

Game One- Jags vs Tennessee Tech.

South Alabama would get the scoring started in the top of the 2nd. After a Victoria Ortiz groundout, Sasha Willems would hit a 1 out triple to right center. Abby Allen would then hit a RBI sacrifice fly to right. Odalys Cordova would ground out to second to end the inning. Jags lead 1-0.

Moving into the top of the third inning. Marley Sims singled up the middle, then stole second with Bailey Welch at the plate. With one on and nobody out, Welch hit an RBI single to right center. Mackenzie Brasher would strike out for the first out. After a Welch steal of second base, Meredith Keel would hit an RBI single to right Jags lead 3-0. Gabby Stagner lined out and Keel would get caught stealing for the 3rd out.

In the top of the fourth, after Ortiz flied out, Willems would hit a solo homer to left field. Allen would pop out to second. Cordova grounded out to end the inning, Jags now lead 4-0.

In the top of the 5th, Sims singled to lead off the inning. Welch would put down a sacrifice bunt, Sims would advance to second and then to third on an obstruction call. Sophia Mendoza would pinch hit for Brasher. Sims would score on a passed ball and Mendoza would end up walking. Jags lead 5-0. Brasher came back into the game for Mendoza. Keel grounded out for out two, and Brasher was caught stealing to end the inning.

In the top of the 6th, South Alabama would bust the game open.Stagner would walk. After an Ortiz pop out, Willems walked. After a pitching change Allen walked to load the bases. A wild pitch would score a Jag run. Jags lead 6-0. Cordova would walk to reload the bases. Sims reached on a fielders choice, with Willems out at home. Allen would then score on a wild pitch. Jags lead 7-0. Shelby Garrett gets hit by the 3-0 pitch. Welch would renter the game for Garrett. Cordova would score on another wild pitch. Jags increased the lead 8-0. After the 2 out walk by Brasher to load the bases again. Keel would walk to force in a run. Jags would lead 9-0. Stagner would strike out to end the inning.

The 9-0 score would hold up as the game was called after 6 innings. Olivia Lackie would pick up the win, going the distance and improve her record to 6-3 on the year.

Game Two- Jags vs #19 Auburn.

Not a whole lot of offense from the Jaguars vs #19 Auburn. Jenna Hardy would pick up the hard luck loss, dropping her record to 4-4. Hardy gave up single runs in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th innings, on 6 hits. The Jaguars would only scatter 3 hits for the entire game. The final score for the game Jags lose a tough one 3-0.

The Jaguars record moves to 10-7 on the year.

Jaguar Basketball Defeats App State To Advance

Jaguar basketball defeats App State to advance to the third round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The final score 74-64.

South Alabama would start the scoring off and build a 9 point advantage at the 14:19 mark of the first half, 14-5.

App State would battle back to take a 16-14 lead with 9:42 left in the 1st half. The Jags would trail by as much as 8 points with 1:24 left. The Jags would cut the deficit to three 37-34 at halftime.

South Alabama and App State would battle back and forth in the second half. The Jags would tie the game and work their way to a 7 point lead twice at 57-64, with 2:13 left in the game and again with eight seconds left.

The Jaguars were led in scoring by…

Isaiah Moore- 20 points and 5 rebounds

Owen White- 14 points and 4 rebounds

Kevin Samuel- The Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year had 12 points, 15 rebounds and a season high 6 blocks

South Alabama would shoot 48.2% from the field, and 39.1% from the three point line. The Jags improved their record to 17-15 overall and 9-9 in the Sun Belt Conference.

Next up

The Jaguars move on to the third round where they will play #1 seed Southern Miss, Saturday at 11:30. The Jags have played Southern Miss tough this year going 1-1 against them so far. The Jags lost a close game in Hattiesburg 76-72. The Jaguars hammered the Golden Eagles winning by 31 points in the second game, which was in the Mitchell Center. That final was 85-54.

South Alabama Baseball Responds After A Tough Weekend

South Alabama baseball responds after a tough weekend at home. The Jags go on the road to Tulane and beat them handily, the final score 11-7.

The Jags show some power in this game, hitting 3 home runs.

South Alabama would get the scoring started in the first inning. Erick Orbeta would lead off the game and reach on an error by the second baseman. After Colson Lawrence and Will Turner both struck out for outs 1 & 2. Orbeta would advance to 2nd on a passed ball. Joseph Sullivan walked, bringing up JG Bell with two on and two out. Bell would hit an rbi double to left scoring Orbeta. Robbie Petracci would strike out for out three, the Jags led 1-0.

In the top of the 3rd, after Turner is hit by a pitch, Joseph Sullivan would hit a 2 run home run to left. The Jags would lead 3-0. Bell would come up next and single to left, Petracci would walk, bringing up DK Donaldson with nobody out. Donaldson would groundout to third, moving the runners up 90 feet. Altamirano would hit a RBI SAC FLY to center field. That scored Bell on the play Jags led 4-0.

Tulane would get on the board in the bottom of the third picking up 2 runs. The Jaguars lead was trimmed to 4-2.

In the top of the 4th inning, Orbeta would double down the left field line. After Lawrence grounded out to third for the first out. Turner would hit the 0-1 pitch for an RBI single which scored Orbeta. Turner would advance to second on the late throw in. That would bring up Sullivan who would single to the shortstop. The shortstop would then pick up an error on the throw to first. Turner who advanced to third, would score on the same error. The Jags led 6-2. Bell and Petracci would be retired for the second and third outs of the inning.

In the top of the 5th inning, DK Donaldson and Altamirano would both ground out. That would bring up Hunter Donaldson with 2 outs. Donaldson would single to right, then steal 2nd base. Orbeta would walk putting 2 runners on with two outs with Lawerence coming to the plate. Lawerence would hit a 3 run home run to center. He Jags led 9-2

Tulane would pick up 3 runs in bottom of the inning. The Jags lead was trimmed to 9-5

Moving into the top of the 6th, Bell would single to center on the first pitch. Petracci would step to the plate and hit a 2 run homer to right. Jags led 11-5 with nobody out. After DK Donaldson walked, Altamirano would pop out for out number 1. Hunter Donaldson would reach on a fielders choice. Orbeta would hit a two out double, Lawerence would fly out to end the inning.

That’s is all of the scoring the Jags would need and Tulane would only be able to get 2 more runs for the final of 11-7.

Grant Wood got the win and the Jags would improve their record to 5-4 overall

South Alabama will host the South Alabama Invitational starting Friday at 6:30 vs Pepperdine. Iowa on Saturday and Southern on Sunday.
