Jaguar Softball Uses A Big Inning To Comeback In Sweep

Jaguar softball uses a big inning to comeback in sweep. The final score Jags win 9-5, sweeping Georgia State in the Sun Belt opening series.

Things started off promising for the Georgia Stare Panthers. They jumped out to a big lead early, scoring three in the top of the first inning and two in the top of the second inning. Jags trailed 5-0.

In the bottom of the second, South Alabama would get the offense going. Victoria Ortiz would lead off the inning with a triple, that would bring Gabby Stagner to the plate. Stagner would rip a two run home run to left center. Jags trailed 5-2. Odalys Cordova would line out and Emma Kropp popped out for the second out of the inning. After a Bailey Welch walk, Mandy Sims would hit into a fielders choice to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Jags unloaded on the Panthers. Meredith Keel walked on 4 pitches. Mackenzie Brasher and Sasha Willems both singled to load the bases for the Jaguars with nobody out. Ortiz would come to the plate, and hit the first pitch she sees for a two RBI single to center field. Jags trailed 5-4. Just two pitches later, Stagner would double to left field scoring two more. The Jags would lead 6-5. After a pitching change for Georgia State, Cordova would hit the first pitch from Doolittle to second base for a single. Kropp would come to the plate with two on and still nobody out. Kropp would smack a 3 run home run to right center field. The Jags would lead 9-5. The inning would come to an end after Welch grounded out, Sims reached on an error but was thrown out at 2nd trying to advance, and Keel grounded out.

That turned out to be all the Jaguars would need.

Key Stats

Olivia Lackie was roughed up for the Jags. Pitching two innings, giving up five runs on five hits, striking out one and walking one. Jenna Hardy came in and slammed the door shut. Pitching five innings, giving up no runs on three hits, striking out six and walking two. Hardy’s record improved to 10-5 on the year.

Victoria Ortiz and Gabby Stagner both went 2 for 3.
Ortiz had 2 RBI’s and Stagner had 4 RBI’s including the home run.

Emma Kropp went 1 for 3 with RBI’s including the three run home run

The Jags record improved to 19-9 on the year and 3-0 in the Sun Belt.

Jaguar Softball Wins Series And Goes For Sweep Sunday

Jaguar softball wins series, and goes for sweep Sunday. The Jaguars played a doubleheader on Saturday, due to a rain out Friday. The final scores were 8-0 in game one, and 4-3 in game two.

How it happened- Game One

South Alabama would get the scoring going early in the bottom of the first inning. Meredith Keel walked to lead off the inning. Mackenzie Brasher would reach first base on a fielders choice. Keel was safe at second. Sasha Willems would come to bat with 2 on and nobody out. Willems would send a sac bunt to 3rd base. Sasha was thrown out but both runners advanced a base, bringing up Victoria Ortiz. With two on a one out, Ortiz would hit a two RBI single to center. Jags lead 2-0. Gabby Stagner would strike out, Odalys Cordova would fly out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second the Jags would keep on rolling. Abby Allen would walk to lead off the inning. Bailey Welch would lay down a sac bunt to third advancing Allen to second with one out. Marley Sims would come to the plate. Sims would single to center field, Allen would advance to third. After Sims stole 2nd base, and Keel grounded out, Brasher would come up with two on and two out. Brasher would smack a two run single up the middle. Jags led 4-0. After Brasher stole third, Willems would hit an rbi single to first. Jags led 5-0. Ortiz would ground out to end the inning.

That score would hold until the bottom of the 4th. After Welch and Sims made two quick outs, Keel would single. Brasher singled to center, Keel would make it around to third on an error by the center fielder. Brasher stole second base. Willems would come to the plate, with 2 runners in scoring position and two outs. Willems would hit the 3-1 pitch for a two rbi single. The Jaguars would lead 7-0. Ortiz would strike out to end the inning.

The score would stay 7-0 going into the bottom of the sixth. After Sims grounded out to third base to start the inning. Keel and Brasher hit back to back singles, bringing up Willems with two on and just one out. Willems would hit a double to left field, scoring Keel on the play. Ending the game with the final score 8-0.

Key Stats

The Jaguars roughed up Panthers starter Elle Doolittle. Her record drops to 5-2, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits. Doolittle struck out 2 and walked to in 4 innings of work.

Mackenzie Brasher and Sasha Willems both were 3 for 3 for the Jags. Brasher with 2 RBI’s and Willems had 4 RBI’s. Victoria Ortiz also had 2 RBI’S going 1-2 today.

Olivia Lackie was dealing today. Lackie improved her record to 9-4, going 6 innings and giving up 0 runs on 2 hits, striking out 7.

Game Two

South Alabama picked up right where they left off in game two. In the bottom of the first inning. Keel led off the game with a double to left field. Brasher would lay down the sac bunt and reach first on a fielding error by the second baseman. Keel would advance to third on the error. Brasher would steal second with Willems at the plate. Keel scored on a wild pitch and Brasher advanced to third. Willems would end up striking out for the first out. The Jags led 1-0. Ortiz hit an RBI sac fly to center field. Scoring Brasher with 2 out. Jags led 2-0. Cordova would ground out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third inning. Keel would fly out for the first out. Brasher would single on the 0-2 pitch to center field. After Willems flied out, Ortiz would come up to bat. After Brasher stole second, Willems would hit an RBI single up the middle. Jags led 3-0. Cordova would fly out to end the inning.

Georgia State would get on the scoreboard for the first time, in the top of the 4th. Picking up one run and The Jags lead was trimmed to 3-1.

In the top of the sixth inning. The Panthers would pick up two more runs to tie the game 3-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, with the game still tied 3-3. Allen would pop out for the Jaguars, for the first out. After Welch walked, Sims would lay a sac bunt down and reach on an error. Welch would make it around to third on the error. Keel would come up next, fouling out to the shortstop. Sims would advance to second on the play. That would bring up Brasher, with two on and two outs. Brasher would hit the ball to shortstop, who committed another error fielding the ball. That allowed Brasher to reach, but more importantly, allowing Welch to score the game winning run. JAGS WIN by the final of 4-3.

Key Stats

Hallie Adams went the distance for the Panthers, going 6 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs ( just 2 earned) on 5 hits striking out 3. Adams record drops to 2-5 with the loss.

Victoria Ortiz went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s

Jenna Hardy went the distance for the Jags, going 7 innings giving up 3 runs (2 earned). Hardy struck out five walking two, improving her record to 9-5.

The Jaguars improve their record to 18-9 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt.

Next Up

South Alabama goes for the series sweep tomorrow versus Georgia State. Game time 1 pm.

Jaguar Softball Closes Out Their Play In THE Spring Games

Jaguar softball closes out their play in THE Spring Games tournament, early Sunday morning vs Princeton.

Princeton jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring one run in the first and second innings.

The Jags would trail 2-0 headed into the bottom of the 4th. Sasha Willems struck out on three pitches for the first out of the inning. Victoria Ortiz would come to the plate. On the 2-2 pitch, Ortiz hit a solo home run to right center. The Jaguars trailed 2-1. Odalys Cordova would single through the left side. Gabby Stagner would come up and would reach first base on a fielders choice. Cordova was out at second. Abby Allen would strike out for the third out of the inning.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Jaguars offense would put more pressure Princeton’s pitching. Bailey Welch would beat out a bunt single to the pitcher. Mandy Sims struck out for the first out of the inning, bringing Meredith Keel up to bat. Keel would smack a 2 RBI home run to center field. The Jaguars lead by one by the score of 3-2. Mackenzie Brasher grounded out to 3rd. Willems Walked and Ortiz grounded out to end the inning.

The 3-2 Jaguar lead would hold until it went final. Jenna Hardy would pick up the win, improving her record to 8-5 on the year. Hardy pitched five innings giving up two earned runs, striking out three and walked three on 83 pitches. Olivia Lackie would get the save. (Her first of the year). Lackie pitched 2 innings giving up no hits and no runs, striking out four and walking one on 28 pitches. The Jaguars improve their overall record to 16-9 for the year.

Jaguar Softball Splits An Early Doubleheader

Jaguar softball splits an early doubleheader today at THE Spring Games tournament in Madiera Beach Florida.

In game one, versus Lehigh. Both teams would struggle to get anything going until the top of the third. Odalys Cordova would lead off the inning. Cordova would hit a solo home run to left field. The Jaguars would take a 1-0 lead. Brooklynn Bockhaus would fly out and Marley Sims would strike out for the second out. Meredith Keel would walk and Mackenzie Brasher would then ground out to end the inning.

That is unfortunately all of the runs that the Jaguars would get as Lehigh would put two runs up in the bottom of the fourth, and one more in the bottom of the fifth.

The Jags would lose the game by a final of 3-1. Jenna Hardy would pick the loss dropping her record to 7-5 overall. Lehigh’s Katelynn Young would handcuff the Jaguars offense. Young would allow one run (the home run) on three hits, walking three and striking out three.

Game two vs Iona

The second game of the day would have much different results for the Jaguars. South Alabama would score in every inning of the run- rule shortened five inning game.

In the top of the first inning, after a Meredith Keel strikeout. Mackenzie Brasher would single to shortstop. Sasha Willems would fly out to right for out number two. Brasher would then steal her second base of the season, bringing Victoria Ortiz to the plate. Ortiz would hit an RBI double to left field scoring Brasher on the play. Odalys Cordova would then ground out for the final out of the inning.

In the top of the second the Jaguars offense would continue to jump on Iona pitching. Gabby Stagner and Kropp would both reach base, bringing Brooklyn Bockhaus to the plate with two on and nobody out. Bockhaus would single to left. After Marley Sims flied out for the first out, Meredith Keel would single to load the bases. On the next at bat Brasher would hit a two RBI single up the middle. Jags lead 3-0. That would bring up Willems, who after an Iona pitching change doubled to left scoring two more runs. The Jaguars now lead 5-0. Ortiz would strikeout to end the inning.

In the top of the third, the Jaguars continue to put pressure on the Iona staff. Cordova would single to center. After a Stagner popped out for out one. Cordova would steal second, advance to third on the throwing error by the catcher and score on a throwing error by the center fielder. Jags lead 6-0. Kropp would strike out. Bockhaus walked and Sims flew out to end the inning.

In the top of the fourth, more of the same for the Jags. Keel led off the inning with a single. Brasher walked, and Willems flew out to center for the first out. Brasher would steal second to get into scoring position. With 2 runners on one out. Ortiz would smack a 2 RBI double to left field. After an Iona pitching change, Cordova singled to left scoring Ortiz on the play. Sophia Mendoza, who pinch hit for Stagner, would walk. Stagner would come back into the game for Mendoza. Kropp would line into a double play to end the threat by the Jags. The Jags were able to increase the lead to 9-0.

In the top of the fifth, Bockhaus would single to left. Marlayna Capaldi, who pinch hit for Marley Sims, walked. Erin McGlothlin, pinch hitting for Meredith Keel, struck out for the first out. Hannah Ogea, pinch hitting for Mackenzie Brasher, walked to load the bases again. Stephanie Gonzalez pinch hitting for Sasha Willems, would hit an RBI sac fly to the right fielder. Ortiz would hit a sac fly to right scoring Capaldi. Jags lead 11-0. Cordova would foul out to end the inning. Kaitlyn Hughes would make the final score of 11-0 stand up to end the game. Olivia Lackie would pick up the win improving to 8-4 on the season.

Jaguar Softball Earns The Split

Jaguar softball earns the split on day one of THE Spring Games tournament in Madiera Beach, Florida.

Game one versus Chattanooga

South Alabama would get the scoring going in the top of the first inning. Meredith Keel would lead off the game with a double to left center. Marley Sims would lay down the sac bunt, advancing Keel to third. Sasha Willems would hit the ball to right for a sac fly and RBI, scoring Keel on the play. Jags led 1-0. Gabby Stagner would ground out to shortstop ending the inning.

Jenna Hardy who got the start for the Jaguars on the mound. She would make the 1-0 score hold up. Hardy would pitch a seven inning complete game three hit shut out, striking out six and walking one on 90 pitches. Jenna would improve her record to 7-4 on the year.

Game two vs Iowa

Iowa and South Alabama would trade zeros for the first three innings. Iowa would break through in the top of the fourth inning, scoring 4 runs. The big blow coming on a 3 run home run by Grace Banes. Iowa would lead 4-0.

in the bottom of the 4th inning the Jag bats would answer back.

Mackenzie Brasher would single up the middle on the first pitch. Sasha Willems would fly out to left field. After Brasher was thrown out trying to steal second for out 2, Victoria Ortiz would hit a solo home run to right. That cut the Jaguars deficit to 4-1. Gabby Stagner flew out to right ending the inning.

The 4-1 score held until the Jaguars came up in the bottom of the sixth.

Keel would reach on a throwing error and advance to second. After Brasher grounded out and Willems popped out for out two. Ortiz stepped up and hit an RBI single to center. The Jags now trail 4-2. Stagner would ground out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Unfortunately, the Jaguars could not get any closer. The final score 4-2. Olivia Lackie picks up the loss. Lackie would go the distance, pitching 7 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits. Striking out 7 on 90 pitches. Lackie’s record would fall to 7-4. South Alabama’s overall record goes to 14-8.

Jaguar Softball Closes Out Joan B. Moore Memorial

Jaguar softball closes out the Joan B. Memorial with a run-rule win over Tennessee Tech. The final 8-0 in 5 innings.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Jags would get the scoring going. After both Meredith Keel and Marley Sims both grounded out for the first two outs of the inning. Gabby Stagner would single through the left side and advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder. Sasha Willems would come up next and single through the left side, scoring a run. However Willems would be thrown out at first trying to get back, on the play. The run would count. Jags lead 1-0.

Moving to the bottom of the 2nd inning, Victoria Ortiz would walk to lead off the inning. Odalys Cordova would single to left field. Emma Kropp would come to the plate with two on and one out. Kropp would fly out to right field. Ortiz would advance to third on the play. Cordova would steal second. Bailey Welch would strike out for out number 2. Mackenzie Brasher would walk to load the bases. Keel would walk picking up the RBI. Ortiz scored on the play. Sims would come up to the plate, with 2 out and the bases loaded. Sims would hit a two RBI single up the middle. On the play, after the runs had scored, Meredith Keel would be thrown out trying to advance to third. Jags would lead 4-0.

That score would hold until the bottom of the 5th. Stagner would pop out to second base, and Willems would line out to left. Ortiz would come to the plate with two outs. Ortiz would hit a solo home run on the 1-2 pitch to right field. The Jags would extend the lead to 5-0. Cordova would hit a single right back up the middle and advance to second on a throwing error by the catcher. Kropp would walk, Brooklyn Bockhaus would then pinch run for Kropp. Abby Allen would pinch hit for Welch. Allen would smash a three run homer to center field. The Jags would lead 8-0 which was the final.

Jenna Hardy would go the distance for the Jags. Giving up 5 hits 0 runs striking out 2 and walking 2 on just 70 pitches. Improving her record to 6-4 on the year.

South Alabama improved its record to 13-7 overall.

Jaguar Softball Sweeps Play Today

Jaguar softball sweeps play today at the Jane B. Memorial in Auburn Alabama.

Game One

Bowling Green vs Jags

South Alabama would get the offense going in a hurry. In the bottom of the first inning, Meredith Keel would lead off the game with a single to left field. Marley Sims would walk. Both runners would advance on a wild pitch. Gabby Stagner would also walk to load the bases with nobody out, bringing Sasha Willems to the plate. Willems would hit the 2-2 pitch for a two RBI single to center field. The center fielder made a fielding error on the play allowing for the Jag base runners to advance to second and third. South Alabama would lead 2-0. Victoria Ortiz would come to the plate, and hit an RBI groundout to first base. The Jaguars would extend the lead to 3-0 with one out. Emma Kropp would hit an RBI single through the left side. Jag now lead 4-0. After a Odalys Cordova walk and a passed ball. Bailey Welch would strike out for out 2 and Mackenzie Brasher grounded out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second. The Jags offense would make 2 quick outs, after a Keel groundout, a Sims line out. Stagner would walk, bringing Willems to the plate with one runner on. Willems would hit an RBI triple to left. Jags led 5-0. Ortiz would strike out to retire the side.

In the bottom of the third the Jags would blow the game wide open. Kropp would step to the plate and blast a lead off home run to left center. Jags lead 6-0. Cordova grounded out at shortstop for the first out. After Welch gets hit by the pitch, Brasher would double to left. With two on and one out Keel would hit the ball to Left for the sac fly RBI. The left fielder would commit an error on the play allowing the second run to score. Jags lead 8-0. Shelby Garrett would pinch hit for Sims. Garrett singled to second. An error on the play by the third baseman would allow for another run to score. Jags up 9-0. Sims would renter the game for Garrett. Stagner would then walk bringing up Willems with two on and one out. Willems would hit a 3 run home run to left center. Jags lead 12-0. Sophia Mendoza would pinch hit for Ortiz and strike out for out two. After Kropp singled to right field, Cordova would strikeout to end the inning.

The Jaguars would make the 12 runs hold up and run rule Bowling Green in 5 innings.
Jenna Hardy would go the distance for the Jags. Hardy gave up no runs on no hits, striking out six on just 57 pitches. Hardy improved her record to 5-4 on the year.

Game Two

Jags vs #19 Auburn

This game was a pitching duel. Olivia Lackie would come out on the winning side of the duel. Lackie would throw a complete game one hitter giving up 1 run striking out seven.

All of the Jags scoring would come in the top of the 5th inning. Abby Allen would lead off the inning with a double to left. Victoria Ortiz would single, advancing Allen to third. Odalys Cordova would double to right scoring Allen. Jags lead 1-0. Sasha Garrett pinch hit for Welch, and would strikeout for out 1. Emma Kropp pinch hit for Brasher, reaching on a fielders choice and advanced to second on the throw home which caught Ortiz trying to score. Brasher would come back in for Kropp. Meredith Keel would single to center scoring Cordova Brasher was thrown out at home trying to score for the third out. Jags lead 2-0.

Auburn would get a run in the seventh inning. That’s all they would get as Lackie slammed the door. Jags win 2-1

The Jaguars would improve their record to 11-8 overall

Jaguar Softball Opens Play At Jane B. Memorial

Jaguar softball opens play at Jane B Memorial in Auburn Alabama today. Playing two games, the Jags went 1-1 on the day.

Game One- Jags vs Tennessee Tech.

South Alabama would get the scoring started in the top of the 2nd. After a Victoria Ortiz groundout, Sasha Willems would hit a 1 out triple to right center. Abby Allen would then hit a RBI sacrifice fly to right. Odalys Cordova would ground out to second to end the inning. Jags lead 1-0.

Moving into the top of the third inning. Marley Sims singled up the middle, then stole second with Bailey Welch at the plate. With one on and nobody out, Welch hit an RBI single to right center. Mackenzie Brasher would strike out for the first out. After a Welch steal of second base, Meredith Keel would hit an RBI single to right Jags lead 3-0. Gabby Stagner lined out and Keel would get caught stealing for the 3rd out.

In the top of the fourth, after Ortiz flied out, Willems would hit a solo homer to left field. Allen would pop out to second. Cordova grounded out to end the inning, Jags now lead 4-0.

In the top of the 5th, Sims singled to lead off the inning. Welch would put down a sacrifice bunt, Sims would advance to second and then to third on an obstruction call. Sophia Mendoza would pinch hit for Brasher. Sims would score on a passed ball and Mendoza would end up walking. Jags lead 5-0. Brasher came back into the game for Mendoza. Keel grounded out for out two, and Brasher was caught stealing to end the inning.

In the top of the 6th, South Alabama would bust the game open.Stagner would walk. After an Ortiz pop out, Willems walked. After a pitching change Allen walked to load the bases. A wild pitch would score a Jag run. Jags lead 6-0. Cordova would walk to reload the bases. Sims reached on a fielders choice, with Willems out at home. Allen would then score on a wild pitch. Jags lead 7-0. Shelby Garrett gets hit by the 3-0 pitch. Welch would renter the game for Garrett. Cordova would score on another wild pitch. Jags increased the lead 8-0. After the 2 out walk by Brasher to load the bases again. Keel would walk to force in a run. Jags would lead 9-0. Stagner would strike out to end the inning.

The 9-0 score would hold up as the game was called after 6 innings. Olivia Lackie would pick up the win, going the distance and improve her record to 6-3 on the year.

Game Two- Jags vs #19 Auburn.

Not a whole lot of offense from the Jaguars vs #19 Auburn. Jenna Hardy would pick up the hard luck loss, dropping her record to 4-4. Hardy gave up single runs in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th innings, on 6 hits. The Jaguars would only scatter 3 hits for the entire game. The final score for the game Jags lose a tough one 3-0.

The Jaguars record moves to 10-7 on the year.

Jaguar Softball Wins Behind Dominant Pitching

Jaguar softball wins behind a dominant pitching performance by Olivia Lackie, by the final score of 2-0.

The Jaguars would score all of their runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. After Victoria Ortiz flied out to center for the first out of the inning. Sasha Willems would single to right field. That would bring Abby Allen to the plate. On the 3-0 count Allen would hit a 2 run homer to right field, putting the Jaguars up 2-0.

Lackie would make that lead stand. Lackie’s record would improve to 5-3 overall, going 7 innings, giving up no runs on 3 hits, and striking out 14, while walking one.

Allie Floyd would take the loss for La Tech. Floyd’s record would fall to 2-1 on the year. Floyd’s performance was not bad either, going 4 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, walking one.

South Alabama improved their record to 9-6 overall, and are 7-3 at home.

The Jags will travel to Auburn Alabama to participate in the Jane B Moore Memorial hosted by Auburn University.

Jaguar Softball Strikes Tulsa Late

Jaguar softball strikes Tulsa late, with 2 home runs to win a hard fought game 5-3.

Tulsa would get the scoring going in the top of the first. After two singles and a walk the Golden Hurricane would have the bases loaded and nobody out. Tulsa would pick up a run on a sac fly, scoring the runner from third. Tulsa led 1-0 going into the bottom of the first.

Mackenzie Brasher would groundout to the shortstop for out one. Meredith Keel would single up the middle. After a Gabby Stagner strike out, Victoria Ortiz would come to the plate, and hit an RBI double to left center. Sasha Willems would pop out to the pitcher to end the inning. Jags tie it up 1-1 at the end of one.

In the top of the second, Tulsa take the lead back on a RBI sac fly. Tulsa led 2-1 after 1 1/2 innings

In the top of the third. Tulsa would extend the lead on an RBI triple to right field. Tulsa led 3-1 at the end of their half of the third.

That score would hold until the bottom of the sixth.

In this inning the Jaguar bats would come alive. After Meredith Keel grounded out to 3rd base for the first out. Gabby Stagner would single to the left side. Two pitches later Victoria Ortiz singled to right center. Stagner would stop at third. Sasha Willems would come to the plate with only one out. Willems would hit the 2-2 pitch to left field for a three run home run. After an Odalys Cordova strikeout for out number 2. Abby Allen would come to the plate. Allen would connect on the 3-0 pitch to center field for a solo home run. The next batter would be Bailey Welch who would single to left field. Sophia Mendoza would pinch hit for Marley Sims. Mendoza would walk. Sims would return to the lineup for Mendoza. Emma Kropp would then pinch hit for Brasher, popping out to short for out number 3. The Jags would pick up 4 runs on 5 hits in the inning with two left on base. South Alabama would now lead 5-3.

That score would hold until the last out was made. Jenna Hardy would pick up the win after pitching 4 innings of relief. Hardy came in for Kaitlyn Hughes who pitched an inning of relief behind starting pitcher Madison Lagle who pitched two innings giving up two runs on 3 hits and 1 strikeout.

The Jaguars improve to 8-6 overall.
