Jaguar baseball can’t overcome an early deficit in Sun Belt opener. The final score 10-6.
Jeremy Lee would get the start for the Jaguars. Lee (0-3) would not fair well in his start, giving up 5 earned runs. Lee struck out 4 and walked 4.
How it happened…
The Jaguars would open up the scoring in the top of the first. Erick Orbeta led off the game being hit by a pitch. JG Bell would hit the 1-0 pitch to shortstop. Orbeta would be out at second, Bell would beat the throw to 1st, reaching base on a fielders choice.
Will Turner would come to the plate with one on and one out. Turner would single to right. Bell would advance to third on the play. That would bring up Trey Lewis, who would single to right scoring Bell on the play. Jags led early, 1-0. Joseph Sullivan would foul out and Mitchell Heer flied out for the final out of the inning.
In the bottom of the first inning Georgia Southern would score 5 runs, and the Jags trailed 5-1.
Moving to the top of the third inning. After Orbeta grounded out for the first out. Bell was hit by the 1-1 pitch, bringing Turner to the plate. Turner would hit a two run home run to right field. Jags trailed 5-3. Lewis and Sullivan would ground out to end the inning.
Moving on to the bottom of the fifth inning. Georgia Southern picks up 2 more runs. Jags trail 7-3.
In the bottom of the sixth Georgia Southern added 3 more runs. The Jaguars would now trail 10-3.
In the top of the 8th, Bell would walk. Turner would strike out swinging, bringing up Lewis with one on and one out. Lewis would smack a two run home run to left field. The Jags would trail 10-5, as Sullivan would fly out and Heer would ground out for the third out of the inning.
In the top of the ninth inning. The Jags would pick up one run on an RBI single by Orbeta. The Jags would trail 10-6, which would be the final score.
South Alabama’s record would fall to 8-10 on the season and 0-1 in the Sun Belt.
